Did You Know I Love to Paint Poppies?
The first time I remember seeing poppies, I was in Italy. Seeing so many in one place… they just astounded me with their beauty. I took photos that day, and over the years I had wanted to paint from the images. Eventually I did. Years later, my friend Julie had poppies growing in her back yard; and she planted them every year. I loved to visit her and look at her beautiful gardens, but the poppies were particularly delightful to me. Last year, when I was in Seattle visiting my friend Elizabeth, I saw that she had poppies growing in her own garden. While there, I had the pleasure of enjoying one of my early paintings of poppies… Because it’s hanging in her home!
After completing another painting of poppies a few months ago, another one of my friends commented on how much she loved the painting. She said, “I think you should paint even more poppies! Didn’t you paint some others before?” I agreed that I had, but I’ve sold all of them. She said to me, “Then why do you only occasionally paint poppies? You love them. You love painting them. People clearly love them too since the ones you paint always sell… so why only one every few years?” I couldn’t tell her why. I actually hadn’t really ever thought about it!
Fast forward to now and I present to you, my little poppy series! Literally… these are tiny little paintings. I’ve titled them with letters of the alphabet A through L. The first two have sold already. So if you want one, they’re going fast. The others will be on exhibit at Gallery 1250 at Revolution Mill soon. More on that in my next blog post. You can find them here in my shop right now. Take a look!
Also? Since going to see poppies at nearby Dogwood Farms Belews Creek recently, I have even more new photographs of many poppies… in many colors. And I have plenty of blank canvases. So check back!
This image was recently captured while I visited Dogwood Farms Belews Creek and boy what a lot of gorgeous flowers those were. I can’t wait to paint from some of the other close-up photos from that day.
