Artist's Statement
My time in the studio is a form of spiritual practice; I find peace and serenity in painting. The hours at the easel deepen my connection to life that emerges with color and light onto the canvas. It is among my greatest joys to effectively communicate my experiences in the visual medium of painting. My hope is that my art pulls each viewer in, perhaps even revealing some of the intimate feelings I had while creating the piece. Painting also enables me to honor my inner child, and with each new work I'm able to capture facets of those early dreams from childhood on the farm as well as the new ones that have emerged throughout my adult years. Among the most pure of subjects, my landscape and waterscape work depicting the natural world has the potential to reawaken happy memories, inspire current insights, and spark dreams of future times. The gray and brown of the trees, the warm greens and beige of the land, the multi-colored spectrum reflected in the ocean, and the rich blue skies with their fluffy clouds evoke connections to Earth, this planet we call home, and to our deepest essence.
Studio
I maintain a studio at Sternberger Artists Center located at 712 Summit Ave in Greensboro, NC by appointment.
I have a home studio for painting on days when I am disinterested in being out in the cold or hot weather, or just wish to stay in and work, which is often these days.
Bio
Phyllis Sharpe is an award winning artist whose work reflects the beauty of the natural world. Growing up on a farm in Guilford County NC, she was always drawn to the out-of-doors. Her fondest memories are of open spaces of pasture land and fields along with the flowers of her mother’s and grandmother’s gardens. Hopes and dreams were born under the blue-grey dome of the sky above. Her love of water came later through life's journeys with her beloved husband Frank; whether at home on the lake or vacationing at the beach, that energy captivated and inspired her imagination. Frank's death in 2001 became a catalyst for Phyllis’s creative expression on canvas. It was only then that she first picked up a brush. Her work touches the hearts of the viewer by capturing moments of life’s beauty.
